Abstract

A brief historical review of Ecuadorean fictional feature films, as well as a chronicle of the birth of the New Ecuadorean Cinema in the nineties, is presented. This cinema emerged from La tigra (Camilo Luzuriaga, 1989), Sensaciones (Viviana Cordero, 1991), Entre Marx y una mujer desnuda (Camilo Luzuriaga, 1996), Sueños en la mitad del mundo (Carlos Naranjo, 1999), Ratas, ratones, rateros (Sebastián Cordero, 1999), Un titán en el ring (Viviana Cordero, 2002), Fuera de Fuego (Víctor Arregui, 2002), Cara o cruz (Camilo Luzuriaga, 2003), 1809-1810: Mientras llega el día (Camilo Luzuriaga, 2004), Crónicas (Sebastián Cordero, 2005), Qué tan lejos (Tania Hermida, 2006), Cuando me toque a mí (Victor Arreguí, 2008), and Rabia (Sebastián Cordero, 2010). These films present a unique portrait of Ecuadorean and Latin American realities as developed within the New Latin American Cinema frame established in the sixties. This cinematic legacy continues today and in this new context, it is necessary to include Ecuadorean cinema in the exploration of the New Latin American Cinema.
