Visual Identity: a department logo

Adîr, V., Adîr. G & Pacscu N. (2014) define, "A logo is like a 'signature' ... A logo means a graphic and visual representation in a desired original concept. Elements as images, words, shapes or colours, make possible a logo in a harmonious combination which may convey attitudes and values of the company." Also Adir (2013) explains the requirements of a good logo, "simple, relevant, distinctive, memorable, adaptable, reproducible, legible and coherent."

In our academic institutions, departments need to promote their majors, minors, and extracurricular events. An effective way to connect all these activities is by creating a logo. A logo is the first step to create a visual identity and remind all stakeholders of the department's mission.

In 2013, I created the logo for the Department of Modern Foreign Languages at my institution. The letter M comes from the word "Modern" and comes from the name of our institution. The M design is an origami concept in which each fold has a different color. The colors of the primary logo are based on the college's color scheme, while each language logo uses the most recognizable color for that particular language.
