Mapping and Supporting Afro-Latin Communities

This project uses Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to bring the rich history and vibrant cultures of Afro-descendant communities in Latin America to life. Students embark on an immersive journey, exploring the connections between Africa, the African Diaspora, and the unique cultural landscapes of Latin America. Through hands-on data collection, analysis, and visualization, they develop critical thinking, analytical, and technical skills while fostering a deeper understanding of identity, equity, and social justice. By participating in this project, students will be able to:

  • Recognize Key Figures: Identify influential Afro-Latin American cultural figures.
  • Understand Cultural Expressions: Explain the traditions, customs, and unique contributions of Afro-Latin communities.
  • Analyze Community Dynamics: Apply analytical and data skills to explore and map the geography and demographics of these communities.
  • Explore Identity & Equity: Analyze issues of identity, equity, and the lived experiences of Afro-Latin individuals.
  • Connect Diasporic Experiences: Compare and contrast Afro-Latin experiences with those of the wider African Diaspora.
  • Recognize Cultural Contributions: Interpret the significant contributions of Afro-Latin communities to Latin American and global culture.

A Visual Approach: Using GIS for Cultural Understanding

This project demonstrates the power of Qualitative GIS—a tool for understanding culture, history, and social equity. It's more than just mapping; it’s about storytelling through data. We use GIS to visualize complex histories, amplify marginalized voices, and promote a deeper appreciation for cultural diversity.

The Mapping Process: A Step-by-Step Journey

  1. Foundations of GIS: Students begin with an introduction to cartography, GIS frameworks, and essential tools like QGIS. They learn the principles of visual representation and data analysis.
  2. Data Collection & Research: Students conduct in-depth research and collect data related to their specific project focus, ensuring accuracy and consistency.
  3. Visualization & Web Publishing: Data is transformed and visualized using QGIS (or other platforms), creating engaging and accessible interactive maps published online in HTML format.
  4. Sharing & Engagement: Students share their findings and visualizations on social media and other platforms, contributing to wider conversations about Afro-Latin communities and their vital contributions.

Skills Demonstrated:

  • Geographic Information Systems (GIS)
  • Qualitative Data Analysis
  • Cartography & Data Visualization
  • Cultural Studies
  • Historical Research
  • Web Publishing & HTML
  • Community Engagement
